GILGIT: Gilgit-Baltistan’s Minister for Planning and Development, Raja Nasir Ali Khan, embarked on a comprehensive visit to the UNDP Provincial Implementation Unit Gilgit on Tuesday, to oversee the advancements of the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) II project. Led by the Provincial Coordinator of UNDP, Mr. Abdul Basit, the briefing session provided Minister Raja Nasir with insights into the endeavors and accomplishments within the 16 targeted valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan.

In his address during the visit, Minister Raja Nasir underscored the profound impact of climate change on Pakistan, accentuating Gilgit-Baltistan’s heightened vulnerability due to its intricate geographical terrain nestled amidst mountains and glaciers. He stressed the urgent necessity for initiatives like GLOF-II to empower local communities in navigating the perils posed by climate change.

Appreciating the strides made under the GLOF project, Minister Raja Nasir commended the deployment of early warning systems in susceptible valleys, the establishment of community-centric Disaster Risk Management Centers, and the comprehensive capacity building initiatives involving multiple stakeholders.

Furthermore, Minister Raja Nasir advocated for the amplification of these efforts to address the multifaceted challenges of climate change and environmental degradation. He proposed the launch of awareness campaigns in tourist hotspots and educational institutions across Gilgit-Baltistan, aiming to maximize the project’s benefits for the local populace.

The visit by Minister Raja Nasir Ali Khan epitomizes the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and resilience against the adverse effects of climate change in Gilgit-Baltistan.
