In a display of commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the integrity of law enforcement, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took a stern stance against the inappropriate behaviour of a Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) towards a Sub-Inspector of Punjab Police.
The incident, which occurred in Lahore’s Baghbanpura neighborhood, involved the transfer of a trainee sub-inspector, Yasir Naseeb, who had stopped a vehicle with black-tinted glasses during routine patrolling.
The individual in the car, identified as an MPA, took offense at being stopped and demanded a public apology from the sub-inspector, citing a perceived affront to his dignity.Expressing her dismay over the incident, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz met with Sub-Inspector Yasir Naseeb at the Chief Minister House to hear his account of the events firsthand.
During the meeting, CM Maryam conveyed her regret regarding the behaviour of the MPA towards the police officer, emphasi.szing the importance of upholding the law without fear or favour.
“I am deeply ashamed of this incident,” remarked CM Maryam Nawaz, underscoring the principle that no one, regardless of their position, is above the law. She reassured the sub-inspector of her support and encouraged him to continue fulfilling his duties diligently, without succumbing to pressure or intimidation.
Addressing Yasir Naseeb directly, Chief Minister Maryam affirmed, “You have to do your duty in the future… you will never apologise to anyone for fulfilling your responsibility… this is your job, and you must perform it to the best of your abilities.”
Furthermore, CM Maryam issued a show cause notice to the MPA involved in the incident, holding him accountable for his inappropriate conduct towards a law enforcement officer. She emphasised that the law must be respected by all, regardless of their status or political affiliation.
During the meeting, the CCPO was also present, and CM Maryam Nawaz instructed him to ensure that no action is taken against police officers without her consent in similar situations. She reiterated that grievances should be addressed through proper channels, emphasising the need to uphold the rule of law at all times.
“We all should respect the law to set an example for others,” concluded Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, reaffirming her commitment to ensuring justice and equality under the law.
